Biomass
Wood-burning stoves and the larger biomass boilers are fuelled by logs, wood chip and wood pellets (biomass). Biomass is a sustainable fuel source which produces less carbon than fossil fuels. Its use is growing, especially in properties which are not on the mains gas network, as it is cheaper and more environmentally acceptable than many other fuels, and the Government supported its use through the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) but this scheme is now closed to new applicants.
A correctly designed biomass boiler and heating system can provide space heating and hot water for most properties. Depending on the chosen fuel, the system can have a fully automated fuel supply and controls.
